Whether you’re navigating burnout, a major life transition, or just feel stuck in your current season, coaching with Portia offers a supportive space to reflect, realign, and take meaningful action.
Unlike therapy, coaching is focused on helping you move forward—not unpack the past. It’s about reconnecting with your strengths, clarifying what matters most, and designing a life or career that feels authentic and sustainable.
— Coaching Client
While both coaching and counseling provide support, guidance, and space for personal growth, they differ significantly in focus, scope, qualifications, and goals.
Counseling is designed to help individuals manage and heal from mental health challenges, emotional distress, trauma, or interpersonal issues. It often involves processing the past to improve current functioning.
Coaching, on the other hand, is future-focused and action-oriented. It helps clients identify goals, build skills, and create strategies to achieve personal or professional growth.
“Coaching is not therapy; it does not focus on healing psychological wounds. It focuses instead on tapping into potential.”
— International Coach Federation (ICF, 2021)
Counselors are trained and licensed to assess, diagnose, and treat mental health disorders. They may use evidence-based practices (like CBT, EMDR, or play therapy) to treat anxiety, depression, PTSD, and other clinical concerns.
Coaches do not diagnose or treat mental illness. Their scope includes helping clients:
Set and achieve goals
Improve productivity or relationships
Navigate life transitions
Strengthen confidence and decision-making
According to the NBCC, “coaching is not a substitute for mental health counseling, although counselors may also offer coaching within their competencies and licensure boundaries” (NBCC Policy on Counseling vs. Coaching, 2018).
Counseling often includes clinical assessments, treatment planning, and documentation of progress toward mental health goals.
Coaching relies on structured conversations, accountability tools, reflective questioning, and action plans that empower the client to move forward.
“Therapists heal pain, dysfunction, and conflict… Coaches help build vision and skills.”
— Hartig, J. L. (2020). Counseling Today, American Counseling Association
