Couples and Relationship Therapy

Couples and Relationship Therapy

Build a Relationship Where Everyone Can Feel Seen, Heard, and Valued

At Turning Point Counseling & Wellness Services, we provide affirming, culturally responsive couples and relationship therapy for people who want to communicate more effectively, repair emotional wounds, deepen intimacy, or determine what comes next.

When the same conflicts keep happening, trust has been damaged, or communication no longer feels productive, couples and relationship therapy can help you understand what is happening beneath the surface. You do not have to wait until your relationship is in crisis to seek support.

Online Couples and Relationship Therapy

Online couples and relationship therapy offers a flexible way to receive support from a private location that works for everyone involved. Telehealth may be especially helpful for partners balancing work, caregiving, transportation, or different schedules.

Services are available to eligible clients located in states where their therapist is licensed. Availability may vary by clinician.

Is Couples or Relationship Therapy Right for You?

Relationship therapy may be helpful if you are:

  • Having the same argument without reaching a resolution
  • Feeling emotionally disconnected, unseen, or misunderstood
  • Struggling to communicate without becoming defensive or shutting down
  • Rebuilding trust after infidelity, dishonesty, or another rupture
  • Experiencing differences related to sex, intimacy, affection, or desire
  • Adjusting to marriage, parenthood, relocation, caregiving, or another life transition
  • Navigating cultural, racial, religious, gender, or family differences
  • Exploring consensual non-monogamy, polyamory, or another relationship structure
  • Working through conflict related to boundaries, finances, family, or parenting
  • Considering separation and wanting support making a thoughtful decision
  • Seeking premarital counseling or proactive relationship support

You do not need to know exactly what is wrong or who is “at fault.” Therapy provides space to slow down, recognize patterns, and understand what each person needs to feel more secure and connected.

Relationship Therapy That Honors the Whole Relationship

Your relationship does not exist in isolation. Culture, family expectations, identity, past experiences, trauma, finances, work, caregiving responsibilities, and social pressures can all influence how people connect and respond to conflict.

Our approach is trauma-informed, culturally responsive, LGBTQIA+-affirming, and kink-affirming. We welcome clients across a variety of identities and relationship structures, including:

  • Dating, engaged, and married couples
  • LGBTQIA+ couples and relationships
  • Interracial and intercultural relationships
  • Polyamorous and consensually non-monogamous relationships
  • Kink- and BDSM-involved relationships
  • Partners navigating separation or major transitions
  • People seeking support outside of traditional relationship models

We will not assume that every relationship should look the same. Together, we focus on whether the relationship is consensual, respectful, emotionally safe, and aligned with the needs and values of the people involved.

Our Approach to Couples and Relationship Therapy

Therapy is not about choosing sides or deciding who is right. It is about understanding the patterns that keep the relationship stuck.

Your therapist will help you:

  • Identify recurring cycles of conflict or disconnection
  • Understand the needs and emotions beneath each person’s reactions
  • Practice clearer and more respectful communication
  • Develop boundaries and relationship agreements
  • Build skills for managing conflict and repairing harm
  • Strengthen emotional safety, trust, and connection
  • Make intentional decisions about the future of the relationship

We draw from trauma-informed and solution-focused practices while tailoring therapy to the identities, goals, strengths, and experiences of each relationship.

An Affirming Space for Conversations That Are Often Misunderstood

It can be difficult to seek relationship counseling when you are concerned that a therapist may judge your identity, sexuality, culture, or relationship structure.

Our therapists provide affirming care for conversations involving:

  • Sexual orientation and gender identity
  • Kink, BDSM, and power exchange
  • Polyamory and consensual non-monogamy
  • Differences in sexual desire or interests
  • Negotiating consent and relationship agreements
  • Racial, cultural, or religious differences
  • Family and community expectations
  • The effects of discrimination, oppression, or minority stress

These parts of your life are not automatically treated as problems. Therapy focuses on the concern that brought you in and on helping everyone participate in the relationship with greater clarity, consent, connection, and care.

Frequently Asked Questions About Couples Therapy
Do we have to be married to attend couples therapy?

No. Couples and relationship therapy is available to people who are dating, engaged, married, partnered, separated, or navigating another type of committed relationship.

Do you work with LGBTQIA+ couples?

Yes. Turning Point Counseling & Wellness Services provides LGBTQIA+-affirming relationship therapy. We welcome clients across sexual orientations, gender identities, and relationship structures.

Do you provide therapy for polyamorous or consensually non-monogamous relationships?

Yes. We provide affirming support for polyamorous and consensually non-monogamous relationships. Therapy may include multiple partners when clinically appropriate and agreed upon in advance.

Is your practice kink-affirming?

Yes. Our clinicians understand that kink and BDSM are not automatically signs of dysfunction or trauma. Therapy can provide a nonjudgmental space to discuss consent, communication, boundaries, power exchange, intimacy, and relationship agreements.

Can we use insurance for couples or relationship therapy?

Couples and relationship therapy is offered on a self-pay basis. We do not accept insurance for this service. Paying out of pocket allows therapy to remain focused on your relationship’s needs and goals without requiring an insurance diagnosis or limiting care based on insurance requirements.

Contact us or review your selected therapist’s profile for current rates and session options.

Can couples therapy help after infidelity?

Couples therapy can help partners understand the impact of infidelity, address the factors surrounding the rupture, establish boundaries, and determine whether and how trust can be rebuilt. Therapy cannot guarantee reconciliation, but it can support greater honesty and clarity.

Will the therapist take sides?

The therapist’s role is not to declare a winner. The therapist works to understand the relationship system, maintain accountability, and help each person communicate and participate more effectively.

Can we attend relationship therapy online?

Yes, online relationship therapy may be available when all participants are physically located in a state where the treating therapist is authorized to practice at the time of the session.

What if only one of us wants to attend?

Relationship therapy works best when everyone participates willingly. If your partner is not ready, individual therapy may still help you understand your needs, establish boundaries, and make decisions about the relationship.

Is couples therapy appropriate when there is abuse?

Traditional couples therapy may not be clinically appropriate when there is ongoing coercion, intimidation, or interpersonal violence. Your therapist will assess safety and may recommend individual support or specialized services before beginning relationship therapy.

How do we get started?

The right therapeutic fit matters. Search our therapist directory to learn about each clinician’s specialties, approach, availability, and licensure by state. Choose the therapist who best fits your relationship, situation, and location.
